Meeting with Mom :)
Saturday, 21 February 2009

Hello friends.
A few weeks ago I finally had a chance to see my mom again!   It took 12.5 years for this reunion to happen...  Thank you all so much for helping my brother an I resettle my mom in Poland.  Her life in Belarus was very harsh... after seeing some of the photos that she took of her property being looted, tragic deaths and fires taking out the rest of what could have been, I am that much more convinced that it was absolutely right for us to help her make that move.

It took me a year to plan this trip to make it right (as you can see from my previous posts, I have failed on my first attempt - didn't anticipate that much bureaucracy).  Everything went really good!  Mom was already in her new apartment when I arrived, greeting me with a spread of meats, pickles and some choice cognac.  While there, I helped my brother continue finishing her apartment - installing lights, purchasing kitchen cabinetry, kitchen stove, and just generally hanging out with mom and having a great time seeing her again.

Check out all of the pictures from my trip on this page:

Summer Update
Sunday, 20 July 2008

Hello friends.

Here's my current progress report:

My brother and I have finalized the paperwork required to purchase the apartment in Bialystok.  As far as I know - the building (which is currently being constructed) will be ready late fall of 2008.  After the hand over of the apartment to us, we will have to put in everything - paint the walls, get furniture, refrigerator, lights, curtains.  We are thinking about creating some neat energy-efficient l.e.d. lamps for my mom.

You could find updated photos of the building in progress at http://www.rogowskidevelopment.pl//galeria_lesna.html

Meanwhile I have applied for another travel document in mid-June.  I am expecting to get it this summer, apply for a visa from the polish consulate in NYC and hopefully be able to go finally meet with my mom in Poland.

I found this great cynical movie about the politics in Belarus.  It's a great inspiration to fight for freedom, peace and honesty.  You can legally download a version of it with English subtitles at http://ploshcha.wolnabialorus.org/ (the subtitled link is on the top - just control click to download, the file is pretty big).

Thank you all for your help and support.  It has been a great comfort to know that even from afar, I am not helpless.
